Indianapolis Overview

Indianapolis is the state capital of Indiana and its largest city. Indianapolis is home to approximately 2.1 million people as of 2010. Industry in Indianapolis has traditionally revolved around government and manufacturing, but today the city has diversified into education, health care, finance and even tourism. Indianapolis is home to the world famous Indianapolis 500 race and has hosted other major sporting events such as both the Men and Women’s NCAA tournaments. Super Bowl XLVI will be held in Indianapolis at the Lucas Oil Stadium. Major colleges and universities located in Indianapolis are Ball State University, Butler University, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana, Marian University, Martin University, Oakland City University Indianapolis campus, The Art Institute of Indianapolis, Vincennes University Aviation Technology Center, the University of Indianapolis, the University of Phoenix, and WGU Indiana. Conventions are a major pull for tourism in Indianapolis such as the Gen Con, a 30,000 member role-playing game convention, and the National FFA Convention for examples. Almost 200 major municipal parks are located in and around Indianapolis occupying over 10,000 acres. Eagle Creek Park is the largest municipal park in the city and is among the best parks in America.

Indianapolis Attractions

Two historical monuments are located in downtown Indianapolis, the Monument Circle and Indiana War Memorial Plaza, are part of one of America’s best urban spaces. There are many more War Memorials located in Indianapolis, second only to the nations capital. Indianapolis is a very sporty city, hosting several major league sports teams and competitive venues.
